Improving seismic performance of elevated cylindrical water storage tanks using nonlinear isolators incorporating liquid–structure interaction

Authors

Abstract:

Pervasive construction of elevated liquid tanks as the most important sources for urban hygienic water, and their failure under earthquake, highlighs the necessity for research toward new passive control devices. Design and use of base-isolation systems for elevated liquid tanks is propounded as a novel seismic engineering technology. To date, no special examination has been discussed in relation with the workability of such systems in reducing the seismic response of elevated liquid tanks considering tank wall flexibility. In this study, the seismic performance of a steel elevated water tank with/without isolator was analyzed and outcomes were evaluated using lead-rubber and elastomeric bearings by performing time-history analyses. To this end, finite shell elements for tank wall and internal finite elements for liquid, and bilinear hysteretic elements for the base-isolation systems are elected, and the seismic analysis of flexible liquid tank is performed in the time domain under real earthquake. The results show that the lateral control device despite excessive structural displacement could offer a substantial benefit for reducing the system’s seismic response which depends on the earthquake characterestics.

Seismic Behavior Evaluation of Concrete Elevated Water Tanks

Elevated tanks are important structures in storing vital products, such as petroleum products for cities and industrial facilities, as well as water storage. These structures have various types and are constructed in a way that a greater portion of their weight is concentrated at an elevation much about the base. Damage to these structures during strong ground motions may lead to fire or other ...

Seismic Behavior Assessment of Concrete Elevated Water Tanks

Elevated tanks are very important structures and consist of various types. Water supply is vital to control fires during earthquakes. Also they are utilized to store different products, like petroleum supplies in cities and industrial zones. Damage to these structures during strong ground motions may lead to fire or other hazardous events. Elevated tanks should stay functional after and before ...

Introduction of Air Cushion to Reduce Seismic Demand in Cylindrical Water Storage Tanks

Water storage tanks not designed explicitly for seismic loading could require retrofit. One of the common ways of retrofit include some structural change in the lateral load resisting system that could be expensive and requires the tank to be out of service for relatively long time. This paper introduces a novel method to reduce seismic demand on tank’s wall without structural intervention. Thi...

Evaluation of Seismic Behaviour of Ferrocement Elevated Water Tanks by Using Ambient Vibrations Tests

In this study a series of ambient vibration tests on the triple ferrocement elevated water tanks with 150 cubic meters volume, is carried out. In order to verify the dynamic characteristics of full, half-full and one full tanks (mass eccentric system), the different arrangements of sensors are used. The effects of base rotation are also considered in the tests. Natural frequencies and mode shap...

PERFORMANCE BASED OPTIMAL SEISMIC DESIGN OF RC SHEAR WALLS INCORPORATING SOIL–STRUCTURE INTERACTION USING CSS ALGORITHM

In this article optimal design of shear walls is performed under seismic loading. For practical aims, a database of special shear walls is created. Special shear walls are used for seismic design optimization employing the charged system search algorithm as an optimizer. Constraints consist of design and performance limitations. Nonlinear behavior of the shear wall is taken into account and per...
